Tawny Owl Box
Installed in the summer of 2023, this box has become a cosy home for some very special residents. Over the past two years, it’s been the stage for two successful Tawny Owl breeding seasons. Our resident pair, Bonnie and Clyde, raised their fluffy chicks Puff and Ball in 2024, and then Tay and Dee in 2025. It’s been incredible to watch these owls thrive and raise the next generation right here!
Fun Fact: Tawny Owls are masters of stealth – their soft feathers are specially adapted to make their flight almost silent, helping them sneak up on prey without being heard.

Barn Owl Box
This box was the very first one I purchased back in 2019. Originally mounted high in a tree, it’s now on the back of the garage – and it’s had quite an interesting history! Although designed for Barn Owls, only one ever paid a brief visit. Tawny Owls have inspected it a few times, but the only successful residents so far have been a pair of Blackbirds who raised their chicks here in 2024.
When it was still in the tree, a Pine Marten even moved in for a couple of days – a rare and exciting guest! It just goes to show that wildlife has a mind of its own, and every box has its own story.
Fun Fact: Barn Owls have incredible hearing – they can locate prey in complete darkness by sound alone, thanks to their asymmetrical ear placement.

Pine Marten Box
Purchased alongside a squirrel box in early 2024, this box was designed with pine martens in mind – and it’s had a few curious visitors! While most martens have used it as a handy stash spot for food, one decided to take a nap inside, which was a real treat to witness.
In 2025, the box surprised us by becoming a nursery for a pair of Great Tits, who successfully raised their chicks here. It’s a perfect example of how adaptable wildlife can be and how every box tells its own unique story.
Fun Fact: Pine martens are agile climbers and can leap up to 4 metres between trees – a skill that helps them hunt and avoid predators in the forest canopy.

5 Small Bird Boxes
In 2025, we introduced five new boxes designed for small birds, replacing the original Tree Box and Garage Box and adding three more that are still waiting for names. These boxes have already brought plenty of activity!
The Tree Box, our very first, has been a favourite for Blue Tits over the years, hosting several successful nests. The Garage Box came close to housing a Great Tit nest a few times but never quite made it. One of the new boxes was an instant hit last year, with a Great Tit pair raising chicks – the female we named Mandy after a viewer.
All five boxes are busy year-round with roosting birds: a Blue Tit in the Tree Box and Great Tits making themselves at home in the others. It’s amazing to see these little birds using the boxes for both nesting and shelter.
Fun Fact: Blue Tits and Great Tits are clever and adaptable – they’ll often inspect multiple boxes before choosing the perfect spot to nest, and they can squeeze through tiny openings thanks to their flexible bodies.
